Letter From the President
I need a vacation. It is that time when I am happy if a meeting ends early, when thoughts wander to my destination, when I am reviewing in my head the contents of my suitcase, which was packed two days early, and when I am totally ready to be someplace else. At this time of the year, I like to go with my husband to Riviera Maya, Mexico, on the Caribbean. We go to a lovely place that we have been going to for many years. I bring about 20 issues of magazines with me that I have been getting, but haven’t read yet—Bon Appetite, Travel+Leisure, Conde Nast.
We are lucky to be able to go. The venue looks out to the gorgeous turquoise, blue and green sea where we see cruise ships sail, and scuba and fishing boats. In the distance, we can see the island of Cozumel. We sit on lounge chairs at the beach and at the pool and read and pamper ourselves. At this all-inclusive resort, we go to a new restaurant each evening, enjoy the entertainment if we feel like it, or just people watch. It is a time to refresh, to rethink, to recover. I read old emails, because I am trying to catch up, delete old email, read new email, and just think. I think about new ways of doing things at work, how to determine the impact of our work, finish papers I need to finish, what new ones to start, and other new initiatives.
One of the things I like to do is develop a new “to do” list of people to visit, and places to go. I write thank you notes, sympathy cards, and other correspondence I have been putting off. I can’t wait.
I hope you have a time to relax and rejuvenate this summer too. We all deserve it!
