Letter From the President

During this month of July, with many important historical events, I am reminded of some of my family’s own “historical” events.  The 4th of July has always had a special meaning for my family with two of my sisters born on the 4th of July, 8 years apart. We always had 3 reasons to celebrate this day and my sisters thought the fireworks were happening all around just for them. In 1976, the year of the US Bicentennial, I lived in Boston. My next-door neighbor, Matt, who I married in March 1977, took me to the Hatch Shell to see the Boston Pops, conducted by the icon Arthur Fiedler, who was directing the 1812 Overture with downtown Boston church bells ringing and cannons on the Esplanade being fired. This fanfare started two years prior and has become a 4th of July tradition all across the United States.

This year, as we watched on TV, I thought of some of the communities that have chosen not to allow the Overture to be performed amid the war in Ukraine because it commemorates Russia’s defeat of Napoleon’s Army. Listening and watching reminded me of that time in Boston, when we celebrated the country’s 200th birthday at the Boston Harbor. It reminded me of the rich history we celebrate on the 4th and the importance of our culture and community voice as we struggle at each of our institutions to defend our academic and everyday freedoms. With or without the 1812 Overture, which incidentally is not an overture at all, I think of how, even in the United States, we have to continue to work every day to maintain the freedoms we have worked so hard to obtain.

Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program

The National Institutes of Health, in partnership with the Lasker Foundation, is pleased to announce the 2023-24 Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program. The program supports clinical researchers in the early stages of their independent careers. Lasker Scholars are appointed as tenure-track investigators in the NIH Intramural Research Program for 5 years, followed by 3 years of funding at an extramural research institution (up to $500,000 direct costs per year) or continued appointment in the intramural program.  Candidates must have a clinical doctoral degree and a professional license to practice in the United States, and cannot already have obtained tenure at a research institution. The application deadline is August 25, 2023.
